O, Come All Ye PLAYFUL

It’s time to request an entry book to enter the 24th Annual Polk Senior Games scheduled for February 27 – March 14, 2016. The Games offer a two-week series of 100 athletic and recreational Olympic-style events. They attract nearly 2,500 men and women, 50 and over, with a variety of skills - the serious competitor, the fun at heart, the seasoned athlete, the late bloomer, and the physically challenged. The purpose of the Games is to promote friendly competition, fellowship, health and wellness, an active lifestyle, and volunteerism.

Competition, held at various locations throughout Polk County, is offered in Archery, Badminton, Bag Toss (cornhole), Basketball Shooting, Basketball 3 on 3, Billiards, Bocce, Bowling, Bridge - Party, Checkers, Chess, Cribbage, Ballroom and Social Dancing, Square Dancing, Darts, Euchre, Field Events, Fishing, Fly Casting, Golf 18 Hole Singles & Mixed Doubles  and Putt & Chip, Horseshoes, Lawn Bowling, Pepper, Pickleball, Powerlifting, Punt Pass Kick, Racquetball, Road Race 5K, Scrabble, Senior Smarts, Shooting – Rifle, Skeet, Sporting Clays and Trap, Shuffleboard, Softball, Sudoku, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track, and Walking. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each event and age division.

Registration begins the first week of January. The individual entry fee is $10 for the first event and $3 for each additional event up to a maximum of $28. Fees for team sports are $125 for Softball and $50 for Basketball 3 on 3. There is also a facility fee for 18-Hole Golf, Bowling, Archery and Shooting. Everyone receives a specially designed T-shirt. A free Closing Celebration for participants, family and friends is held at The Lakeland Center and includes goody bags, health fair, entertainment, special awards, and door prizes.

Volunteer Spotlight - Helen Borgwardt


Volunteer Spotlight


Helen Borgwardt has been a Polk Senior Games volunteer for 6 years – since 2009. She volunteers year round for Polk Senior Games. She works in the office every Tuesday mostly on the computer updating databases for State Games qualifiers, rulebook mailings and emails. She was introduced to the Games by her downstairs neighbor Marie Gouldsbury. Marie had the year-round Tuesday volunteer job until her death in March of 2014.
Helen’s hometown is Plant City but she now lives in Lakeland. She loves travel, reading, outdoor sports like walking, biking, hiking, and swimming and spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Helen also competes in the Games. She has won several medals but says her biggest accomplishment was winning the gold medal in the Boot Scootin’ Boogie in 2015.
Helen loves working with the other volunteers, making new friends and seeing the many participants having fun and enjoying the Games!

Polk Senior Games was founded in 1992 by Nancye Thornberry of Lakeland who was inspired by her 70-year old brother competing at the National Senior Games in Syracuse, NY. With the support of the Polk County community, the Games began in 1992 with 777 entrants. Polk Senior Games has grown to be one of the largest senior games in the country with over 2,500 participants in 2015.

Polk Senior Games is a non-profit, 501(c) (3), organization managed by a Executive Director Deena Wilbur and a volunteer Board of Directors. The Games are presented annually in cooperation with parks and recreation departments, sports and civic organizations and over 700 volunteers.

Polk Senior Games is sanctioned by the Florida Sports Foundation to qualify participants for advancement to the annual Florida Senior Games, which leads to the bi-annual National Senior Games.

The 2015 – 2018 Board of Directors for Polk Senior Games were elected at a recent regular meeting of the organization. Unforgettable Senior Moments


The 23nd Annual Polk Senior Games created “Unforgettable Senior Moments” for 2,500 men and women who competed in the Games which ran from February 28 through March 16. These competitors and over 750 volunteers shared moments of fun, fellowship, sportsmanship, and competition in 100 events.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR 23rd ANNUAL POLK SENIOR GAMES



 

 
Don't delay. The deadline to register for the 23rd Annual Polk Senior Games, scheduled for February 28 to March 16, is fast approaching. Entries must be postmarked by Wednesday, February 11 or hand-delivered to the Polk Senior Games office at 515 East Boulevard St. in Bartow by 5 PM on Friday, February 13.  


Forty sports and games are offered for men and women who are 50 and older. There's something for everyone, including: archery, badminton, bag toss, basketball, billiards, bocce, bowling, bridge, checkers, chess, cribbage, dancing, darts, euchre, field events, fishing, fly casting, single and mixed doubles golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling, pepper, pickleball, racquetball, 5K road race, Scrabble, senior smarts, rifle, skeet, sporting clays and trap shooting, shuffleboard, softball, Sudoku, swimming, table tennis, tennis and walking. Events take place throughout the county, but county residency is not required.


Entry fees are $10 for the first event and $3 for each additional event up to a maximum of $28. Some events have additional fees. Everyone receives a specially designed T-shirt and is invited to bring family and friends to the Closing Celebration at The Lakeland Center. Competitors from the talent show will be performing and there will be a health fair, goody bags and lost of door prizes. Parking and admission at the closing celebration is FREE.

2015 Polk Senior Games Registration in Progress


 


Register NOW for the 23rd Annual Polk Senior Games. The Games, scheduled for February 28 – March 16, offer a two-week series of 100 Olympic-style events in 38 athletic and recreational sports. They attract nearly 2,500 men and women, 50 and over, with a variety of skills - the serious competitor, the fun at heart, the seasoned athlete, the late bloomer, and the physically challenged. The purpose of the Games is to promote friendly competition, fellowship, health and wellness, an active lifestyle, and volunteerism.


Competition, held at various locations throughout Polk County, is offered in Archery, Badminton, Bag Toss, Basketball Shooting, Basketball 3 on 3, Billiards, Bocce, Bowling, Bridge, Checkers, Chess, Cribbage, Ballroom and Social Dancing, Square Dancing, Darts, Euchre, Field Events, Fishing, Fly Casting, Golf - 18 Hole Singles and 18 Hole Mixed Doubles and Putt & Chip, Horseshoes, Lawn Bowling, Pepper, Pickleball, Powerlifting, Punt Pass Kick, Racquetball, Road Race 5K, Scrabble, Senior Smarts, Shooting – Rifle, Skeet, Sporting Clays and Trap, Shuffleboard, Softball, Sudoku, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track, and Walking. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each event and age division.


The individual entry fee is $10 for the first event and $3 for each additional event up to a maximum of $28. Fees for team sports are $125 for Softball and $50 for Basketball 3 on 3. There are also facility fees for Golf, Archery, Shooting and Bowling. Everyone receives a specially designed T-shirt. The postmark deadline is February 11. A free Closing Celebration for participants, family and friends is held at The Lakeland Center on Monday, March 16 and includes goody bags, health fair, special awards, door prizes and entertainment.
